They don't call Las Vegas "Sin City" for nothing. The dazzling neon lights have long been a magnet for those looking to roll the dice. Fortunes have been made and lost in this seductive city, which stays open for business 24 hours a day. Away from the tables and slots, the city hosts some of the finest shows and theater productions in the country, as well as being a desert outpost for some of the world's most prominent chefs. For a little break from the Strip, you can don you tin foil hat and head off to explore the ominous spots around Area 51.

No umbrella necessary in Nevada

Nevada is the country's driest state and rarely sees any precipitation. Needless to say, umbrella sales here are not making anyone rich. Just because the heavens rarely open over the deserts here, that's not to say that there aren't swings in temperature. Only the hardiest types visit Nevada during the sizzling summers, unless of course you're planning to while away your days in the air-conditioned casinos. The wildlife in Nevada is as hardy as the weather. It takes some special skills to live out in the dry deserts of the state and there's a surprisingly large number of fauna which possess them. If you're staying in a rural Nevada vacation rental, when you walk along the trails you could spot everything from lizards basking in the midday sun, to little scorpions scampering across the sandy paths. Elsewhere in the state, you'll need your binoculars, because you're not going to want to miss sightings of falcons and eagles circling on the thermals.

How to get to and around Nevada

Fly into Reno Tahoe Intl. Airport (RNO), the closest airport, located 23.2 mi (37.4 km) from the city center.

If you're traveling by train, Reno Station, Winnemucca Station and Elko Station are the main stations in the area. It's easy to get around Nevada by jumping on the metro at SAHARA Las Vegas Monorail Station, Westgate Las Vegas Monorail Station or Harrah’s & The LINQ Station.
