New Delhi

India’s capital city, New Delhi, is not just a metropolitan – it’s an era that reeks of mythology, mystery and magic. New Delhi is a city with an interesting blend of history and urbanisation. From Mughal monuments to modern malls, you will find everything in between, and then some more! Ancient ruins, dusty marketplaces, street foods and an overwhelming blend of culture and colour – it’s a hotspot for tourists, adventurers, shopaholics and foodies. Most often than not, the crowd and chaos dampen the first impression - But look beneath the surface and you will be amazed how fast you fall in love with the city.

Getting There
It is the capital city and is accessible from every corner of the country and is also one of the most popular landing destinations for people travelling to India.
By Air – Indira Gandhi International Airport (New Delhi) is very well connected to all major cities in and outside India. It has regular flight operations by most of the major airline companies.
By Train – New Delhi Railway Station, Old Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station together play the pivotal part of Delhi’s Railway Network. Trains connect Delhi to more or less every major or minor city in India.
Airport - Named after former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi International Airport is today the busiest airport in India in regards to cargo traffic. It is also credited as the 12th busiest Asian airport and the 25th busiest airport in the world, handling the traffic of around 50 million annually. It won the Best Airport award in the 25-40 million annual traffic category and is also one of the only few airports in the world which have bagged a carbon neutral status.

What to do
New Delhi is a potpourri of cultures. Exploring the city can be quite the challenge for amateurs and you will often discover a rewarding sight or experience in the unknown street corners of the city. India Gate, Connaught Place, Janpath market etc. are amongst the most popular destinations for tourists. Your trip to New Delhi is most certainly incomplete if you haven’t tasted the delicious cuisines this city offers or if you haven’t strolled down the famous shopping alleys. Being a metropolitan city, the nightlife is also quite active.

Where to stay
New Delhi is a perfect example of a home away from home – only if you let it. For accommodation, the city has everything to offer from throwaway price dormitories to highly luxurious resorts. These days, homestays and hostels in New Delhi are gaining immense popularity and New Delhi being a tourist hotspot is home to many such affordable and comfortable options. Paharganj area is quite popular amongst tourists and backpackers for its myriad accommodation options closely followed by Karol Bagh. Business trips or for those who need the luxury while staying calls for grand facilities along with the accommodation and South Delhi or Gurgaon might be a better option. Connaught Place is also a tourist hotspot when it comes to choosing a place to stay because of its location, convenient access to all other parts of Delhi, innumerable shops and marketplaces along with a number of drinking and dining options. It all depends on your taste, preference and more importantly the budget.

What to eat
Innumerable restaurants in the city offer a horde of dining options. New Delhi is also quite popular for the gastronomic journey it imparts. Other than the amazing fine dines, street food in New Delhi is an amazingly wild ride. Classic North-Indian delicacies dominate the food scene and you will be confused if not stunned by the plethora of options. Aloo Tikki, Different types of Chaat, Chole Bhature, Rajma Chawal, Parathas and Dahi Bhallas are a must try when in New Delhi. You can also calm your sweet tooth by gorging into a plate full of jalebis, gulab jamuns or kulfi.

Getting Around
New Delhi is a pretty large city and to top it off, a crowded one. Getting around can be quite a daunting task and it is best to be well informed about the whereabouts beforehand. Private and public transportation are the basic two breakdowns of ways to go around the city. You can opt for a booked cab which is the most comfortable way to travel albeit a little expensive compared to public transport. On the other hand, public transportations are quite manageable and easy to access for travelling to and from anywhere in the city. Buses, autorickshaws (tuk-tuks), cycle-rickshaws and most importantly, the amazing network of metro-rail are your best bets. The metro rail is an economic and quite comfortable way of travelling if you want to avoid the road traffic. Auto-rickshaws and cabs either run by a meter or mostly, by negotiation but are also comfortable as compared to the public bus or metro service which can get way too crowded and sweaty for some. Another convenient, economic and ecologically great alternative is to hire a bicycle and explore the city on your own.
New Delhi, is not a city, it’s a journey that you must take once in a lifetime to learn and experience life and the innumerable shades of it. Keep an open mind and an open soul you will be amazed how magical this city of crowd and cacophony can become if you look beyond its surface!
