The castle of Strassoldo di Sopra is hidden in the peaceful green countryside of the spring-water area of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, stretching between the Tagliamento and Isonzo rivers and is still the private dwelling of the counts of Strassoldo that built it more than a thousand years ago.
The family has finely renovated three lovely ancient stone houses and rents them as holiday homes where guests may pass a wonderful relaxing holiday in a charming atmosphere not far from the beach and Venice.
The castle is situated in an ideal position for those who wish to discover this beautiful region which has many natural and historical attractions to offer and is on the border with Austria, Slovenia, the Adriatic Sea and the Region of Veneto and only 90 km from Venice, 35 km from Trieste and 20 km from the golden sand beach of Grado. In Winter you can also reach the region's best ski resorts in only one hour's drive.
A jewel of the castle is its romantic garden, surrounded by spring-water streams.
In Strassoldo the ground is never colder than 13 Celsius degrees and this has a beneficial influence on nature and allows many exotic species to grow in the area – from old Chinese rose bushes to palm trees. Canadian maple trees bring Indian Summer colors in Friuli.
Each of the three holiday homes has its own private garden with access on the castle's beautiful main garden.
The natural and historical environment is enchanting, peaceful and romantic and ideal for families and demanding guests searching a quiet place where to rest, make nice walks or go biking in the great countryside and choose whether to go swimming in the sea and/or visit the many historical and natural attractions Friuli-Venezia Giulia has to offer.
The main building of the castle is placed in the middle of the castle's 'borgo' and to reach it you have to pass through the entrance arch 'Porta Cistigna' and stroll along the old cobbled road with on the left side a stone wall and on the right side the 'Guards' houses' (Casa Rambaldo and Casa Artuico) and a bit further 'La Vicinia' (former administrative centre of the castle) and then a smaller arch leading into a small court between the castle's main building and the church of St. Nikolaus (former castle's chapel)
Behind the church, set in a semi circle, there are a series of buildings once used as stables, artisans' houses, granaries and archives.
Continuing the walk you will reach the ancient tower, which is connected to the main building and a bit further the rice mill. On the other side of the path there is a big garden (former orchard) and on the back of the main building the main garden.
A small bridge on a little channel is the border line between the nearby twin castle of Strassoldo di Sotto, also belonging to the family of the counts of Strassoldo.
Strassoldo is the perfect place to dive into the flair of a region not overrun by tourists and discover the attractions and an incredible variety of landscapes concentrated in a small area, starting from high mountains, to rolling hills, green plains and rock or sand beaches.
Near to the castle there many excellent wineries and rural restaurants.
The climate is very good with wonderful Springs and Autumns, warm Summers and mild Winters.
