Car: not necessary
A perfect base to explore the Jungfrau region all year round, Lauterbrunnen is situated near the most impressive glaciated valley of the Alps. Lauterbrunnen means 'many fountains' and throughout the entire valley, a total of 72 waterfalls cascade from the mountains. There are also the spectacular Trümmelbach waterfalls. These glacier falls (10 in total inside of a mountain) attract many people from all over the world to the mountains from April to November (closed during winter). Lauterbrunnen is the departing point to the more famous, car-free resorts of Wengen and Mürren, as well as the Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe (the highest train station in Europe) and the Schilthorn/Piz Gloria. There are superb train links to Interlaken (45m from Bern, 2 h Basel 2.5h Zurich/ Geneva) so a car is not essential. If travelling by car, good road links to the French motorway network mean a comfortable 9 hours from Calais or Zeebrugge. Eurostar via Paris is also an option.
Other Activities: White water rafting, shooting
Ski: Lauterbrunnen is a great base to explore the Jungfrau Ski Region. There are 45 mountain trains, cable cars, chair and ski lifts, with 213km of pistes for skiers and boarders. Also 100km of winter hiking and X-country paths, and 50km of sledge runs. From the apartment you can take the bus to Lauterbrunnen station in 5 minutes, then train to access skiing above Wengen, or take bus to Schilthorn cable car in 7 minutes to access Mürren skiing .Grindelwald can be reached from Kleine Scheidegg (wonderful views) or drive there in 20 minutes. For the adventurous skier there is the Lauberhorn run above Wengen, or the wonderful 16km long run from the top of the Schilthorn back to Lauterbrunnen, rated as one of the best runs in the world with stunning views, by the Daily Mail Ski and Snowboard magazine. The Sunday Times chose the pistes at Mürren as having some of the best scenery in the world. Excellent English-speaking ski-schools are based in Wengen and Mürren.
